HISTORY QUESTION #941

Who undertook the first official flight in a manned airplane?

The Brothers Wright

Explanation

On 17 December 1903 the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright carried out the first official, manned flight in history with an airplane heavier than air. The flight lasted 59 seconds and they flew almost 500 metres. The brothers had developed their mechanical skils by working with bikes, motors and other machines for many years. The first ever artificially flying vehicle was built by the Greek Archytas (428-347 BC) and the 'dove' is said to have flown around 200 metres.
