When did the first human enter space?



Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) was a Soviet test pilot and cosmonaut. He became a national hero when he became the first human in space on 12 April 1961. Gagarin was sent up in the spacecraft Vostok 1 and spent 108 minutes orbiting before landing safely again on Earth. Gagarin died in a flight crash with a MiG-15 jet fighter near Moscow in 1968. He is buried on the Red Square.
