HISTORY QUESTION #3736

Who was the first to use the expression "Iron Curtain" about Europe's split into two blocks?

Winston Churchill

Explanation

The expression "Iron Curtain" was first used by Dr. Joseph Goebbels in an article in "Das Reich" on 25 February 1945. Winston Churchill later reused the expression in his famous Fulton speech which took place on 5 March 1946. The "Iron Curtain" was the "curtain" that cut across Europe during the Cold War. Whereas Western Europe was oriented towards the US, Eastern Europe looked towards the Soviet Union. Europe was thus split between capitalism and communism.
