The Italian architect and art theoretician Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472) was one of most important figures of the Renaissance. He wrote the theoretical works "De Pictura" (1435-1436) on painting, and "De re aedifactoria"(1443-52) on architecture, the former of which discussed the theoretical structure of central perspective. Alberti was also a sculptor and goldsmith, and worked as a secretary to the Pope.
