The Spanish film director Luis Buñuel Portoles (1900 - 1983) graduated in Spain and then moved to Paris with an ambition to work in the film industry. His second film, "The Golden Age" (1930) was banned in most countries the world over because it contained a scene, where the leader of a sadistic violent orgy looks remarkably like Jesus. Buñuel is also famous for his surreal images. He was also an atheist, so many of his films attack religion, and in particular the Catholic church. Buñuel's way of filming was also very econoical - he made his films in only a few weeks, stayed closely to the manuscript and filmed in chronological order to bring down the time spent cutting the film afterwards.
