He started writing scripts for tv sketches, some in collaboration with Mel Brooks. He started directing films in the 1980s. Within a short time span, he directed films such as "Rain Man", "Good Morning Vietnam" and "Sleepers". The film "Wag the Dog", featuring Robert de Niro as a ruthless spin doctor also won a lot of acclaim. In 2001, he saw success with the comedy "Bandits", featuring Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton in the main roles. So far, Levinson has directed 6 actors in Oscar nominated performances.
