The British singer and actor David Bowie was born in London in 1947. Most people know him as a singer, but actually Bowie has also been acting for many years. His first feature film was "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (1976). Up through the 1980s he featured in several films, including the Japanese "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" and Martin Scorsese's "Last Temptation of the Christ", in which he plays Pontius Pilate". His most known role is his portrayal of the Serbian-American scientist Nikola Tesla in Christopher Nolan's 2006 film "The Prestige". Bowie's music has also been used for countless soundtracks, including that of Lars von Trier's "Dogville", in which the song "Young Americans" is featured. David Bowie retired in 2004 after having heart surgery.
