Vladimir Iljitj Lenin (1870-1924) was a Russian Marxist revolutionary and communist politician. In 1895 he was arrested, jailed and sent to Siberia for publishing an illegal newspaper. The name Lenin is the revolutionary code name he started using in 1901. From 1905 he lived in exile in Europe, but after the 1917 February revolution he returned to St. Petersburg. After the October revolution that same year, Lenin was in charge of building the Soviet state in Russia.
