Jan Ullrich (born 1973) is a former professional German cyclist. Ullrich won the Tour de France in 1997 as the first German winner ever. He gained victory after he and his team managed to split the field on one of the flatter stages with strong sidewinds, thus also leaving the team captain Bjarne Riis behind. Both rode for Deutsche Telekom. The year before, in 1996, Jan Ullrich came second, only 1.43 minutes after the winner, Bjarne Riis.
