The Maori is the indigenous population in New Zealand. The first Maori were Polynesians who arrived in the country between 800 and 1300, founding the Maori culture. They named the country "Aotearoa", "the land of the long white cloud". Originally, the lived off fishing, farming and hunting. The British colonisation led to several clashes in the 19th century and a war, which finished in 1865. After this, the Maori were integrated into New Zealand societies. The Maori continue to fight for their ethnic and cultural distinction. Only around 60,000 still speak Maori.
