The Volta is a river in western Africa. It is 1600 km long and originates in Burkina Faso, which earlier was called the Republic of Upper Volta. It runs through Ghana into the Guilf of Guinea. It has three main tributaries called the Black Volta, White Volta and Red Volta - or Nakambe, Mouhoun and Nazinon. Lake Volta in Ghana is a reservoir formed from the river.
