The Egyptian hieroglyphs are a writing system invented around 4000 BC in ancient Egypt. It is made up of three different kind of signs in a very complex systems. Until one of Napoleon's soldiers found the Rosetta stone in 1799 it had been impossible to decipher the hieroglyphs. They had been puzzling historians for centuries as they were found everywhere in the Majestic temples and on monuments. The word hieroglyph comes from the Greek and means 'god's words'.
