The Suez Canal was inaugurated in 1869 by the French Empress Eugenie and lies in Egypt. It connects the Mediterranean Sea at Port Said to the Red Sea at Suez. The canal is 162 km long and up to 365 metres wide. Every year, som 25,000 ships pass through the canal. It takes between 11 and 16 hours to sail through. It took 10 years and 1.5 million workers to build the canal. Of these workers, 120,000 died during the construction.
