The Suez Canal was inaugurated in 1869 by Empress Eugénie of France. It is located in Egypt and connects the Mediterranean Sea at Port Said with Suez by the Red Sea. Egyptian president Nasser nationalised it on 26 July 1956 and closed it to Israeli shipping. This made the UK and France enter into an alliance with Israel to invade the Canal.
