The Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman was born in Stockholm in 1915. The American producer David O. Selznick saw her talent early on and brought her to Hollywood, where she had her debut in the film "Intermezzo" from 1936, directed by the Swede Gustaf Molander. Her bi break was in the 1942 film "Casablanca", by many considered one of the best films ever. Then her career really took off. She married the Italian director Roberto Rossellini and was cast for some of the biggest films of the era. Bergman has won three Academy Awards in her career - an unusual accomplishment. Her last Oscar-winning performance was in "Murder on the Orient Express", directed by Sidney Lumet. After her husband died in 1977 she returned to Sweden where she played in Ingmar Bergman's "Autumn Sonata". She died in 1982 in London following a long battle with breast cancer. She is still considered Sweden's largest gift to Hollywood.
