Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was a Portuguese seafarer, sailing under the Spanish flag. In 1520, he was the first European to sail south of South America to reach the Pacific Ocean. The passage was later named after him - the Magellan Strait. Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines during the battle at Mactan. Captained by Juan Sebastián Elcano, one of the original five ships in Magellan's fleet made it back to Spain. Elcano thus became the first person to circumnavigate Earth.
