Apartheid (Afrikaans: separation) was a system of racial segregation. When the National party won the general election in 1948 they introduced the system. New legislation classified inhabitants into four racial groups ("native", "white", "coloured", and "Asian"). Interracial marriages were banned and blacks were not allowed to be on the streets at night, had to carry id at all times, and lost their right to vote. Apartheid was finally banned in 1992 after intense external and internal pressure.
