The American Neil Alden Armstrong (born 1930) was a fighter jet pilot in the Korean War. After the war, he served as a test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics where he flew the space plane X-15. In 1962 he was selected to become an astronaut. He flew to the moon aboard Apollo 11 and landed on the moon itself on 21 July in 1969 in the moon lander the Eagle. Armstrong walked on the surface of the moon and said the famous words "That´s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind".
