Film director Ang Lee was born in Taiwan in 1954. Despite his Taiwanese roots, Ang Lee has directed most of his films in the United States. In Taiwan, he was behind the major hit "Pushing Hands", which raised his profile in Hollywood. There he had a number of successful movies in the 1990s, such as "Sense and Sensibility" and "The Ice Storm". However, he did not have a major breakthrough before the release of his film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" in 2000, which constituted his comeback in Taiwanese cinema. The film also won him an Oscar in the "Best Foreign Film" category. In 2006 he was awarded a second Oscar in the higher profile category "Best Director". Ang Lee has lately moved in to lower-budget films like the quirky "Taking Woodstock" in 2009.
