The German film director Werner Herzog was born in 1942. He was a major figure in the German film movement "New German Cinema" of the 1960s. His real breakthrough, however, was not until 1972 with the movie "Aguirre, the Wrath of God", which told the story of a Spanish conquistador leading his men through El Dorado. The same exotic theme is present in Herzog's later film "Fitzcarraldo" form 1982, which is about a man's heart-felt desire to build an opera house in the middle of a jungle. Before that, he did a remake of F. W. Murnau's classic horror movie "Nosferatur" from 1922. The new version premiered in 1979. Werner Herzog is counted among the very greatest of German directors along with Fritz Lang, F.W. Murnau and Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
