Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin (1889-1977) was one of the great pioneers of early American cinema, despite his English nationality. He was one of the first to introduce the 'slapstick' genre, and he also invented several alter-egos and personas that featured repeatedly in his films, such "the Tramp" from City Lights (1931).
