Ants have a very complex social structure. All working ants are almost entirely female, who control the queen, who only hold one function for them: to lay eggs. The females kills their brothers whilst they are still larvae. But the queen does more than secure the survival of the species. She also gives birth to other queens and can control the number of female and male eggs herself. When the newborn queens are ready to mate with the males, she lays so many male eggs that the females do not have time to kill them all.
