After 'Jaws 'signalled the beginning of the term 'Blockbusters', there were still film makers who had a vision for their films independent of the demands of studios and surplus - the so-called independents. Examples are John Cassavetes, who made 'A Woman under the influence' in 1974 and Jim Jarmusch, who made 'Permanent Vacation' in 1980 whilst still at university. The most famous independent is David Lynch. He broke through with 'Eraserhead' in 1977 and later gained fame with 'Twin Peaks'.
