The island is famous for its many pre-historic stone statues, called moai, which are found along the coast. The history of Easter Island is rich and controversial. The island's population har survived famine, epidemics, civil war, slavery, colonization and deforestation. The number of inhabitants has gone done dramatically several times, but is now around 3000 inhabitants.
