The Solomon Islands is a sovereign state in the Pacific Ocean east of Papua New Guinea. The capital is called Honiara. The country has around 500,000 inhabitants. The official language is English, and the islands belong to the Commonwealth. The Spanish explorer Alvaro de Mendana Mendana found gold on one of the islands in 1568. He thought it was the source of King Solomon's mines and therefore gave the islands the name 'Solomon Islands'.
