SPORTS QUESTION #4885

What happened to Eugène Christophe when he rode over Col du Tourmalet in 1913?

He broke his front fork

Explanation

Col du Tourmalet (2115 m) is one of the most known mountain passes in Tour de France. The pass was first introduced in 1910, when the Pyrenees became a part of the Tour. The most known anecdote happened in 1913. The French rider Eugène Christophe broke his front fork on the way down the mountain and had to fix it himself at a local smithy, after which he continued the race. To mark the 100th anniversary of the Pyrenees in the Tour de France, for the first time, there was a stage finish on the top of Col du Tourmalet.
