The Frenchman Thomas Voeckler (born 1979) became a professional cyclist in 2001. It was not until Tour de France 2004, however, that the world really got to know him. On the 5th stage he took over the yellow jersey and hung onto it for 10 heroic days, before he had to surrender to Lance Armstrong (US Postal) who went on to win the race. Voeckler ended as number 18 overall, a good achievement. He was the French national road race champion twice (2004, 2010).
