Popeye is an American comic book character created by Elzi C. Segar (1894-1938). Popeye first appeared in Segar's strip Thimble Theatre in 1929 - first as a minor character, later as the main character. He is a sailor, not particularly bright, but charming and heroic in his own, unperturbed way. His life is especially driven by his great love for Olive Oyl, whom he often has to fight for - in particular against the villainous Bluto. When Popeye eats spinach, he gains extraordinary strength.
