George Washington (1732-1799) was the first president of the USA from 1789 to 1797. He was an American plantation owner and commander-in-chief for the colonial army during the American War of Independence 1775-83. Washington took part in the writing of the new Constitution and very heavily influenced the shaping of the new Republic. Both a state and the American capital were named after him.
