Kia Motors is South Korea's oldest and 2nd biggest car producer (only Huyundai Motor Group, which also partly owns Kia, is bigger). The company was first created in 1944 to make bike parts. Later, whole bikes were made, then cars and other products. Today, Kia is one of the country's biggest 'chaebols' - a special name given to South Korean industry conglomerates which, with the blessing of the state, have spread into several different industries. The name Kia comes from the words 'ki' (to come out) and 'a' (for Asia).
