Avian flu is an illness caused by viruses adapted to birds but which also under certain circumstances can infect humans and other mammals. Several different kinds of influenza exist, as well as several avian subtypes. An epidemic of the H5N2 variety started in Mexico in 1992 and did not get under control until 1995. In Europe, the first bout of H5N1 avian flu was documented in three dead ducks in the Danube delta in Romania in October 2005. Before this, there had been break-outs in e.g. Hong Kong and Thailand.
