The Warsaw Pact was officially called "The Warsaw Treaty Organization of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance". On paper, it was a military alliance between a number of Eastern European states, but in actual terms, it was more a Soviet underlining of its power over Communist Eastern and Central Europe as it ruled the Pact. The Pact was established on 14 May 1955 as a response to West Germany's integration into NATO and was formally dissolved at a meeting in Prague on 1 July 1991.
