Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a German composer and pianist, born in Bonn. His work as a pianist was halted by his worsening deafness. Beethoven composed a great number of musical pieces, including the opera "Fidelio" (1805), "Für Elise" and his "9th Symphony" (1824), which he composed while totally deaf. A section from the final movement of that symphony has become a musical symbol of the EU.
