Aida is an opera by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. It was composed in 1871 and first staged in Cairo in connection with the inauguration of the Suez Canal. The story takes place in early Pharaonic Egypt during a war between Egypt and Ethiopia. Aida, an Ethiopian princess and slave of the Egyptian princess Amneris, and Radames, an officer in the Egyptian army, fall in love.
