HISTORY QUESTION #342

What was the little island in Polynesia called where the Bounty mutineers settled?

Pitcairn

Explanation

The British Pitcairn Islands lie in the southern Pacific Ocean. Originally populated by Polynesians, the islands then remained uninhabited until the Bounty mutineers settled. The mutiny on the Bounty occurred aboard the British Royal Navy ship HMS Bounty in 1789, and has since become famous through books and films. The mutiny was led by Fletcher Christian against the commanding officer, William Bligh. The mutineers set Lieutenant Bligh and 18 crew loyal to him afloat in a small boat. The wreck of the ship can still be seen under the water.
