POLITICS QUESTION #3204

The city Monrovia is one of two capitals in the world named after an American president. Of which country is Monrovia the capital?

Liberia

Explanation

James Monroe (1758-1831) was the fifth President of the USA, 1817-1825. He is known for the Monroe doctrine (1823)which stated that the United States would not tolerate further European intervention in the Americas and cut all remaining ties to France that existed from the war in 1812. The West African country Liberia's capital Monrovia was founded in 1822 and named after Monroe, who had been a strong supporter of the colonisation of the area. 30 years earlier Sierra Leone became the first permanent colony for African Americans in Africa.
