August Strindberg (1849-1912) was a prolific Swedish writer and central figure in the development of modern drama. He wrote realist plays on the struggle between the sexes, symbolist dramas and naturalist novels. He wrote three poem collections, several fables and fairy tales, historical novels, didactic prose and accounts of folkways on Swedish skerries, such as "The People of Hemsö" (1887), "The Father" (1887) and "Miss Julie" (1888).
