Raphael (Raffaello Santi, 1483-1520) was an Italian Renaissance painter and architect. After his apprenticeship in Perugino, Raphael worked in Florence and in Rome after 1508, where he decorated three rooms (stanzas) in the Vatican with vast frescoes, e.g. "The School in Athens" (1509-1510) and "The Parnassus" (1510-1511). He was head architect of the St. Peter's Basilica from 1514 until his death in 1520, and was buried in the Pantheon at his own request.
