Michelangelo

Explanation

Michelangelo Buonarotti (1475-1564) was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, illustrator and poet and the most significant artist of the High Renaissance, active in Florence and Rome. Michelangelo's major early works include the sculptures Pietà (1497-1500) in the Saint Peter's Basilica, and the colossal statue David (1501-1504) in Florence. From 1508 to 1512, he painted the ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel, and from 1536-41 "The Apocalypse" on its altar wall. As chief architect of the basilica from 1546, he designed the west wing of the church with its imposing dome (1585-90).
