The Italian painter and art theoretician Piero della Francesca (ca. 1416/17-1492) was a prominent figure in early Italian Renaissance. His works are characterized by a pronounced humanism, early use of perspective and innovative use of geometrical shapes. Among his major works are the frescoes of the church San Francesco in Arezzo, "The Legend of the True Cross" (1452). In his day, he was also known as a geometrician and mathematician.
