Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, ca. 1386-1466) was an early Italian renaissance artist and sculptor from Florence. Donatello is known as the artist who reinvented sculpture in his day. In addition to free-standing sculptures, he worked on perspective in relief art. Well-known works by Donatello include Marcus (1413) and St. George (ca. 1417). His bronze, David (1445), was the largest free-standing sculpture since Antiquity. In 1453, his equestrian statue of the condottiere Gattamela was unveiled.
