Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603-1659) was a Dutch seafarer and explorer. He is best known for his voyages in 1642 and 1644 where, as the first European, he 'discovered' Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) and New Zealand. He also mapped substantial parts of Australia which he named 'New Holland" in 1644. Australia was given its current name in 1804.
