James Cook (1728-1779) was a British explorer and one of the first Europeans to achieve contact with Australia, the Hawaiian Islands and New Zealand. He started his first expedition aboard the HM Bark Endeavour, leaving from Plymouth in 1766. He died during his third expedition. Due to bad weather, he returned to Hawaii where he was killed alongside several of his men after a fight with the locals. James Cook was a mathematical and navigational genius and a strong cartographer. He used these skills to complete the hydrography of Earth.
