Datsun is a Japanese car brand. It was created in 1931 when the DAT Motorcar Co. released a new, smaller model. To mark the smaller size, the 'son' was added to the company name Dat. When Nissan took over the brand in 1933, the name was changed to Datsun, because 'son' can also mean loss. It was also a nod to the sun in the Japanese flag. Datsun ceased to exist as a separate brand in 1986, but was probably best known for its sports cars.
