Agoraphobia is the fear of open spaces and being alone. Earlier, agoraphobia only meant a fear of being on wide open spaces, but nowadays, the term has been extended to include other elements. At its worst, the sufferer cannot walk in the street without being accompanied for fear of fainting or possibly even dying. The fact that the sufferer himself can see how unreasonable this sounds makes the condition all the more painful. Around 5 per cent of all people develop agoraphobia at some point during their life.
