Afrikaans (Boer) is a West Germanic language which developed from the Dutch used by farmers in the Netherlands from 1600 onwards. It has also borrowed from English, French, Malay and African languages. The language is spoken in large parts of South Africa, and not just by descendants of the Dutch settlers. Around 16 million people speak the language, which is one of South Africa's official languages.
