Enver Hoxha (1908-1985) was the sole leader of Albania from the end of World War 2 until his death in 1985. Hoxha - and the Communist party - changed political direction several times and ended up being both politically and culturally isolated with no real allies. Entering and leaving Albania was very difficult indeed and strictly controlled by the state. Hoxha suffered from paranoia and felt an attack on the country was imminent. He thus built over half a million concrete bunkers in case of war, many of which still dot the country.
