Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967) became the first Chancellor of West Germany and was in power 1949-1963. Before that, he was the first leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which he was also a co-founder of in 1945. Before World War II, Adenauer was the Mayor of Cologne 1917-1933. His Western-oriented, anti-communist outlook paved the way towards West German membership of NATO in 1955 and the European Community in 1957.
