Burkina Faso is a country in west Africa bordered by Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. The capital is called Ougadougou. The country has around 16 million inhabitants and an area of 274,200 km². The area was colonised by the French around 1890 when they beat the local Mossi kingdoms. The country gained independence from France 1960 and has since then been through a range of regimes before arriving at the semi-presidential republic it is today. The country was called Upper Volta until 1984.
