The Versailles peace treaty was signed on 28 June 1919 by France, Great Britain, Belgium and its Allies on one side and Germany on the other side. It marked the end of World War I. The treaty obliged Germany to abolish conscription and restrict its armed forces to number no more than 100,000 troops. Germany also had to pay 132 billion Marks to the Entente. The US never ratified the treaty, because the country thought the conditions were too harsh.
